"While he was still a long way off, his father caught sight of him, and was filled with compassion"
- Luke 15:20 -
The Sacrament of Reconciliation
The Sacrament of Reconciliation, also known as Confession or Penance, is one of the beautiful healing sacraments of the Catholic Church. Through this sacrament, we encounter the mercy and forgiveness of Jesus Christ. When we sin, we damage our relationship with God, others, and ourselves. In Reconciliation, God lovingly welcomes us back, forgives our sins, and gives us the grace to begin again.
Jesus gave the Church the authority to forgive sins when He said to His Apostles, “Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them” (John 20:23). In confession, the priest acts in the person of Christ, listening with compassion and offering God’s forgiveness and peace.
The Sacrament of Reconciliation includes:
-
Examining our conscience and recognizing our sins
-
Feeling true sorrow for our sins
-
Confessing our sins honestly to the priest
-
Receiving absolution, where our sins are forgiven
-
Completing a penance to help repair our relationship with God and others
-
Reconciliation is not about punishment—it is about healing, mercy, and love. God never tires of forgiving us when we come to Him with sincere hearts. This sacrament helps us grow closer to Christ, strengthens us against temptation, and fills our hearts with peace.
At St. Eugene Catholic Church, we encourage all families to make Reconciliation a regular part of their spiritual life. Whether preparing for First Communion, Confirmation, OCIA, or simply seeking God’s mercy, the Sacrament of Reconciliation is a powerful reminder that we are deeply loved and never beyond God’s forgiveness.
Reconciliation is held every Wednesday 6-7pm
