The Sacrament of Holy Orders is one of the seven sacraments of the Catholic Church. Through this sacrament, a man is ordained to serve the Church as a deacon, priest, or bishop. Holy Orders continues the mission that Jesus Christ gave to His Apostles: to teach, sanctify, and guide God’s people.

The word “orders” refers to the different levels of ordained ministry in the Church. Through the laying on of hands and the prayer of consecration by a bishop, the Holy Spirit gives special grace to the person being ordained so he may faithfully serve God and His people.

There are three degrees of Holy Orders:

Bishop

Bishops are the successors of the Apostles. They lead dioceses, teach the faith, celebrate the sacraments, and guide the Church in unity with the Pope. Bishops have the fullness of the Sacrament of Holy Orders.

Priest

Priests serve the people of God in parishes and ministries. They celebrate the Mass, hear confessions, baptize, witness marriages, anoint the sick, and provide spiritual guidance. Priests work closely with their bishop to care for the faithful.

Deacon

Deacons are ordained to serve. They assist at Mass, proclaim the Gospel, preach, baptize, witness marriages, and serve those in need through charity and ministry. Some deacons later become priests, while permanent deacons remain deacons and often serve while married.

Holy Orders is a vocation — a special calling from God. Men who feel called to the priesthood or diaconate spend years in prayer, discernment, study, and formation before ordination. Through their ministry, ordained men dedicate their lives to serving Christ and His Church.

The Sacrament of Holy Orders reminds us that Christ continues to guide and care for His Church through those He calls to serve in ordained ministry.

Thinking About Becoming a Priest?

Have you ever felt a desire to serve God in a deeper way? Have you wondered if God may be calling you to the priesthood? A vocation to the priesthood begins with prayer, openness, and a willingness to listen to God’s voice.

Priests are called to serve the Church by celebrating the Sacraments, preaching the Gospel, guiding God’s people, and bringing Christ to others through their lives and ministry. The priesthood is not simply a career — it is a vocation, a special calling from God.

If you are thinking about becoming a priest, here are a few important steps:

Pray

Spend time in prayer and ask God for guidance. Attend Mass regularly, receive the Sacraments, and ask the Holy Spirit to help you discern His will for your life.

Talk to a Priest

Speak with your parish priest or vocation director. They can answer questions, guide you through discernment, and help you better understand the priesthood.

Stay Involved in the Church

Serve in your parish community through ministries, volunteer opportunities, altar serving, youth ministry, or helping at church events. Serving others helps you grow in faith and leadership.

Learn About the Faith

Read Scripture, learn about the teachings of the Church, and deepen your relationship with Christ. A strong prayer life and knowledge of the faith are important parts of discernment.

Trust God’s Plan

Discernment takes time. It is okay to have questions or uncertainties. God does not call the perfect — He calls those willing to trust Him and follow where He leads.
