The Sacrament of Marriage is a sacred covenant established by God in which a man and a woman unite in love and commit themselves to one another for life. In the Catholic Church, marriage is one of the seven sacraments and reflects the faithful, loving relationship between Christ and His Church.

Marriage is not simply a contract or legal agreement. It is a vocation and a calling from God. Through this sacrament, couples receive special graces to help them love one another faithfully, build a holy family, and guide their children in the Catholic faith.

In the Sacrament of Marriage, the husband and wife promise to:

  • Love and honor each other for life

  • Remain faithful to one another

  • Support each other in all circumstances

  • Be open to the gift of children

  • Raise their children in the faith

Catholic marriage is built on three important foundations:

  1. Unity – one man and one woman joined together in love.

  2. Permanence – marriage is intended to last a lifetime.

  3. Openness to Life – welcoming children as a blessing from God.

During the wedding ceremony, the couple exchanges vows before God, the Church, and witnesses. The priest or deacon blesses the union, and God strengthens the couple with sacramental grace to live out their vocation faithfully.

Marriage is a beautiful sign of God’s love. It teaches us about sacrifice, forgiveness, commitment, and the importance of placing Christ at the center of family life. Through prayer, participation in the sacraments, and mutual love, married couples are called to help one another grow in holiness and lead their family closer to God.
