Anointing of the Sick
"The prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up."
- James 5:15 -
The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is one of the seven Sacraments of the Catholic Church. Through this sacrament, Jesus brings spiritual strength, peace, comfort, and healing to those who are seriously ill, preparing for surgery, elderly, or near death. It is a powerful reminder that Christ is always close to those who suffer.
In this sacrament, the priest prays over the person and anoints them with holy oil blessed by the bishop, asking God to grant healing, forgiveness, courage, and grace. The sacrament unites the suffering of the sick person with the suffering of Christ and reminds them that they are never alone.
The Anointing of the Sick is not only for those at the moment of death. Catholics are encouraged to receive this sacrament whenever they face serious illness, physical weakness due to age, or emotional suffering connected to health challenges. It can be received more than once if a person’s condition worsens or if a new serious illness arises.
The effects of the sacrament include:
-
Strength, peace, and courage to endure suffering
-
Union with the Passion of Christ
-
Forgiveness of sins when the person is unable to receive Reconciliation
-
Spiritual and sometimes physical healing according to God’s will
-
Preparation for eternal life
As a faith community, we are called to pray for and support those who are sick, elderly, and suffering. Through the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, the Church continues the healing ministry of Jesus Christ.
